An increasingly more common question we field these days is “How good are my filters and can they be upgraded?”. To address this, it’s important to understand MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values). This scale measures how efficiently a filter can capture particles of a certain size. The higher the rating, the better the capture, HOWEVER, the higher the rating the more fan energy you need to pull the air through the filter.
In general, MERV 8 and below is used for pre-filtration capturing large particles. MERV 13 is the standard baseline for new office equipment serving occupied spaces. Some larger robust office equipment may be able to handle up to MERV 16 if designed accordingly.
Anything higher than a MERV 16 is considered HEPA (high efficiency particulate filter). HEPA filters have the highest pressure drop and require specific fan systems to accommodate. They are not intended for office occupancies.
