Commissioning

When Does the Code Mandate it?

As projects start, a common question is always asked “do we need commissioning?”

The answer might be simpler than it seems. Previous versions of the NYC energy code have left this open to interpretation. However, the current 2020 version clearly defined the threshold with one simple word: Connected. If the connected load serving the altered space exceeds 480,000 btu/h cooling capacity or 600,000 btu/h heating capacity, commissioning is required.

480,000 btu/h cooling capacity is equal to 40 “tons”. Any supplemental air conditioning units installed contributes towards the total. This requirement applies whether you installed the equipment or simply distributed the ductwork and terminal units. As a rule of thumb, typical office projects of approximately 15,000 USF or larger should be considered.

Reach out to RDA for any of your commissioning inquiries. We will be happy to help.
