Robert Derector Energy and Sustainability (RDE)

RDE provides independent analysis to help end-users, building owners and data center operators understand how they use energy and what they can do to use less.

Our services include:

  • Local Law 97 Support
  • Energy Modeling for Commercial Tenants
  • LEED v4 Energy Modeling
  • Building Energy Audits and Retro-Commissioning (Including for NYC Local Law 87)
  • Energy Modeling for NYC Energy Conservation Code (NYCECC) Compliance
  • Renewable and Alternative Technology Feasibility Analysis

Our Approach

Throughout our work we strive to distill clear pragmatic advice from technical detail. We have found this to be highly effective in helping decision makers to quickly see both the strength of a business case, and whether a specific energy saving measure makes sense for their current situation.

NYSERDA Incentive for Tenant Fit-outs

Tenants in New York can get 50% off our energy modeling service under the NYSERDA Commercial Tenant Program. This is a great way to deliver high performance (low running cost) tenant space; allowing ideas to be tested out virtually before committing to them in practice.

RDE is an expert on energy modeling of tenant space, and was modeler for three of five pilot projects NYSERDA ran while developing this program:

  • White & Case LLP: a 440,000 square foot high performance tenant fit-out at 1221 Avenue of the Americas.   Open PDF
  • Paul Hastings LLP: a 190,000 square foot high performance tenant fit-out at 200 Park Avenue.   Open PDF
  • Gensler NYC: a 125,000 square foot high performance tenant fit-out at 1700 Broadway.   Open PDF

LEED v4 Energy Modeling

Energy modeling can be used to achieve up tp 28 points for Commercial Interior projects in LEED v4.

NYSERDA FlexTech Incentive

NYSERDA are temporarily doubling their cost-share funding for FlexTech energy studies. Our clients in New York can now get up to 100% off our fees for qualifying energy analysis - inlcuding Local Law 97 Studies. 50% is paid by NYSERDA (as before) with the remaining 50% paid upon installation of one or more measures recommended in the study.

Certified Energy Auditors (CEA)

We have Certified Energy Auditors on staff. Between RDE and our international partner hurleypalmerflatt, we have helped drive down energy costs at over 700 buildings worldwide since 2005.

In New York City, buildings covered by Local Law 87 are now required to have energy audits undertaken by a qualified professional (such as a CEA).

Local Law 97 & 95 of 2019

Most buildings over 25,000 square feet are now required to:

  • Report Building Energy Usage Annually
  • Display an A-D Building Energy Performance Label (from ~Fall 2020)
  • Stay within a prescribed Carbon Budget (starting 2024; tougher from 2030)

Penalties for failure to comply can be substantial!

We know NYC buildings, we know the new laws and we know carbon trading.
