Project Specifics:
  • The facility was an active data center consisting of low density cabinets prior to and during construction. 5,000 sf tier 3 Data Center consisting of both low density and high density, 15 kW, cabinets.
  • Each High density cabinet is equipped with fail-safe open door controls in case of critical high temperature conditions. The internal fans in the cabinets were placed on UPS power to ensure continuous circulation at all times and conditions.
  • Chilled water based self contained cabinets were utilized to support the high density area. Due to space constraints and future proofing studies indicating maximum cabinet densities not exceeding 15 kW, it was decided the glycol mixture circulated from rooftop chillers would be directly piped to each cabinet. Air cooled chillers, arranged in a 2N configuration were designed for the Day 1 loads with matching pump sets.
  • Valved outlets and structural dunnage were put in place to accommodate additional chillers as the future proofing projections come to fruition. Pipe loops under the raised floor with valved outlets permit future high-density cabinets to be installed as the load increases in the room.
  • The low-density areas were served by a combination of air-cooled split systems and existing independently looped dry-cooler based systems. Precise placement of CRAC units were analyzed and implemented to ensure high density areas would maintain conditions if cabinet doors opened due to either maintenance or emergency conditions.
  • Two redundant rooftop packaged units, headered together, cooled the UPS room.
  • A 10,000 gallon chilled water storage tank was designed into the chilled water system to allow for 30 minutes of chiller(s) downtime. The tank size was minimized by taking advantage of the piping distribution system’s inherent thermal storage capacity.
  • New 1,500 kVA – 277/480 Volt Utility service and 1,500 kVA diesel engine generator Two 500 kVA/450 kW Liebert UPS modules and 600 Amp ASTS arranged as 2N Distributed Redundant System Overhead Starline busway system to provide flexibility in power distribution.
